Truly Asian Rhinoplasty

 It is a well-recognized fact that there is a distinctive quality to Asian Rhinoplasty when compared with rhinoplasty for patients from other regions. For Asian patients, especially from East and Southeast Asia, the relatively smaller sized noses have made simple augmentation of the nose using alloplastic implant stand in for the term “Rhinoplasty.” However, with growing understanding of the diverse anatomical features of Asian noses and an increased sophistication in patients’ aesthetic demands, Asian surgeons came to realize that “Asian Rhinoplasty” can be far more complex. This revelatory insight into Asian rhinoplasty has helped Asian surgeons rapidly expand the variety of rhinoplasty techniques employed in our everyday practice for the past 25 years.

At the same time, the world is witnessing both an increase in migration of Asian people to all parts of the world and an increase in interracial marriage. Hence, rhinoplasty for the Asian nose is no longer exclusive to Asian surgeons. To cope with the growing demand for learning about Asian rhinoplasty, publications on Asian rhinoplasty are correspondingly increasing.

In this era of burgeoning interest in Asian rhinoplasty, it was a great pleasure and honor for me to take responsibility of editing an issue about Asian rhinoplasty, which will be a special issue dedicated solely to Asian Rhinoplasty, of the esteemed  Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America  .

In preparation for this issue, I thought about a few things: the content should be comprehensive; authors should be Asia-based experts who are keen to teach and have distinct areas of interest; and the content should be up-to-date. With those considerations in mind, I invited 10 eminent surgeons from Korea, and 1 surgeon from the Philippines. I am deeply grateful to the invited authors for the phenomenal effort that they have put into preparing their outstanding articles. The issue covers anatomy, surgical approach, dorsal augmentation using silicone, augmentation using homologous tissue, injection rhinoplasty, septal extension grafting, nasal tip grafting, hump nose correction, alar base reduction and alar-columellar relationship, correction of short nose, and rhinoplasty for the Southeast Asian nose. All articles provide clear insight into various aspects of Asian rhinoplasty techniques that can only be generated by genuine masters of each field. I believe that this special issue will enrich the readers’ armamentarium for Asian rhinoplasty. It will also contribute greatly to improving rhinoplasty outcome for patients who have similar anatomical features with Asian noses and for revision cases of other ethnicities that need structural grafting and augmentation.

One thing I am not happy with my editing is that I could not feature surgeons from China, Taiwan, and Japan as contributors. However, I am confident that the content provided in this special issue will represent contemporary rhinoplasty practice in East Asia. In addition, due to constraints in length, I feel sorry for not being able to include other important topics, such as deviated nose, septal surgery, and reconstructive surgery.

Last, I do hope this collective endeavor of the contributing authors can help the readers get a better understanding of rhinoplasty for Asian noses. Ideally, this better understanding can translate into better surgical outcomes and, ultimately, actualized into better patient care.
